Don't Believe Everything You Think
Did you know that we have between 50,000-70,000 thoughts a day?! Thats about 35-48 thoughts per minute per person.
And if you can recall your thoughts of this past day so far, how many of them were negative towards your self or your circumstances and how many of them were positive? The problem is we feel like we have no control over the flood gates of our thoughts, but the truth is we do. We just have to learn to be more aware of what we are thinking.
Do you ever wonder why success leaders and entrepreneurs believe highly in creating vision boards or envisioning where you want to be in the next 5 years? It is because there is something powerful in the thoughts we create. Despite wether our thoughts are true or not, we tend to believe them right?
Matthew 6:22-23 (ESV)
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
Translation, what we surround ourselves with also impacts the way we think and the things we believe are true. The music we listen to, the shows we watch, the people we spend most of our time with all subconsciously and consciously impact our mindset wether we realize it or not. All these have an impact on how we think. This reminds me of a statement that is pretty popular and I am sure you have heard, "you are the 5 people you spend the most time with". Mic drop. Can I just beat that over your head for a second? Think about the 5 people you spend the most time with. Are they people you want to model? Does their lifestyle model what you want yours to be like? Now think about the language they use and how they talk about themselves. If it's someone who is a "debbie downer" I bet you can visualize or remember how you felt when you were with that person. Even if you tried hard to think positively in your own mind, their thoughts often start to cloud your own. So be wise with what you surround yourself with an ask yourself if it is doing yourself more harm than good.
And I know it's nearly impossible to live in the world today and be all sunshine an rainbows. What we can do however is turn our not so negative thoughts into powerful productive thoughts. It's reforming the way we look at something. Being able to question our thoughts. Instead of thinking "I am not good at this.", turn it into, "how can I approach this differently, that may enable me to do this." This is taking your thoughts captive before you start to believe them. Because beliefs are just repeated thoughts. For example, No one can dispute that you ate a pint of ice cream after one of your kiddos had a melt down, refused to go to bed, screamed bloody murder for two more minutes and then wet the bed. But the problem here is then we start to believe that because we ate that pint of ice cream, we'll never be swimsuit ready or that you're a failure at being healthy. And once we start to replay that in our minds over and over again, we really start to believe that we just aren't meant to be healthy. Despite how untrue that is!
I know when I am just having a bad day, the more I dwell on the bad day I am having and announcing to everyone I see how bad my day is, the worse it gets. Not only am I in a bad mood but now my thoughts are now focused and hyper sensitive to everything that is possibly going wrong with my day. Then there are other bad days, and I choose to think a little more positively, a let go and let God mindset and my day doesn't quite seem so awful. In fact most of the time it gets better.
So the next time you start your day, wake up with the mindset of hey, I am going to take all my thoughts captive today. And ask yourself: Are these thoughts serving me? Are they what the lord would want me to be thinking? Can I turn this into something productive? What am I surrounding myself with that is making me feel this way right now? And soon it will become habit to be more aware of your thoughts.
I wish you many happy thoughts tomorrow and the next day. I hope you know that you are more valuable that you will ever know and you owe it to yourself to invest in working on your thoughts.
